Shape of Things: Lighting Design
Project Type
Lighting Design
Date
April 2019
Role
Lighting Designer
Location
Willamette University
This is a full lighting design for the play The Shape of Things by Neil LaBute I completed during my Undergraduate Degree. The design is for a small black-box theater with audience on two sides.
This design was created as a semester long independent study with Rachel Steck at Willamette University. I had been working in the lighting studio at Willamette for nearly 3 years at the start of this project, and I had a strong desire to learn how to design lights for the stage. Rachel and I met once a week to go over my progress on this design from concept to submission. The project was done with a software called Capture, used for designing stage lighting. One of my biggest takeaways from this project was the concept of budget. My first design for this project strictly used resources Willamette had on hand to minimize cost, and my design turned out worse than it could have been. Rachel asked me to redo the project without budget as a consideration to see what I could come up with, and this was the final result.
